Australia. The number of anti-Semitic incidents in Australia broke the record. During the last year the Australian Jewish community used to receive thirty reports about anti-Semitic acts monthly.
As Jeremy Johns, the new President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, states in his report, the number of offenses, arsons, and acts of vandalism during the last year went up by 60% as compared with the average number of similar incidents during previous years.
Russia. Unknown vandals destroyed the memorial headstone on the grave of rabbi Israel Salanter, the founder of musar (Jewish ethics), renewed on August 2, 2001, in Kaliningrad. Besides, the vandals uprooted the cemetery gate. An inscription "Death to Jews" and a swastika sign appeared on the memorial board to Jews perished in the Holocaust years.
Rabbi Slanter died in 1883 in Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad) and was buried in the Jewish cemetery, where Jews killed by the Nazi in the Holocaust years lie. The totally destroyed cemetery was reconstructed, and Salanter's grave was found. Representatives of religious Jewry of the entire world erected a headstone and a memorial board on the grave.
The Anti-defamation League and the city Jewish community called the Kaliningrad law-enforcement authorities and administration to find the vandals as soon as possible.
France. More and more Jews in France consider the possibility of repatriation to Israel. According to current data, last autumn the number of appeals to the French department of "Sokhnut" grew 30-40% as compared with the previous year. All this happens against the background of anti-Semitism upheaval in the country which started after the beginning of the Palestinian "intifada" in September 2000.
Potential repatriates "are worried about the situation in France as much as about Israeli problems", - the representative of the Jewish Agency said. However, he also noted that "they pay more attention to the historical experience of the Jewish community of France and link it with the current situation".
USA. Representatives of Jewish communities are greatly worried about the future world congress of the "Islam Nation" organization, headed by Luis Farrakhan. Farrakhan is known for his anti-Semitic statements. Many members of his organization are real extremists and support ideas of race segregation, fascism and interethnic hatred.
Despite the last report of the Anti-Defamation League to the USA government, no measures were taken.
