The only museum in Ukraine and in the world of Peter Markish, a Jewish poet, writer and dramatist, classic of national literature in Yiddish, was opened in October, 1998, in the ancient town of Polonnoye, a former Jewish-Ukrainian town in the Volynskaya province. The museum is situated in one of the two rooms of the Polonsky Jewish cultural association named after the poet, in the former building of the main choral synagogue of the town.

It took the author of these lines over 30 years to collect with great difficulties the specimen and exhibits of Markish's life and creativity for the museum. The persistent search of the poet's books, photos, newspaper and magazine articles, continued not only in Ukraine, but also in Russia, Israel, USA and Poland. The exposition consists of 23 books by the writer in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ukrainian, Russian, English and even in Chuwash. The admirers of Markish have sent one collection of 12 poems in Yiddish and its translation in English from the USA and the Chuwash edition of his famous poem "A dancer from ghetto" was sent from Cheboksar. The Chaws national poet Gennadiy Aigi translated this poem into his native language.

A very special place in the exposition belongs to the jubilee Israeli edition of the poet's three books, which were published in 1998 thanks to the initiative of the town administration of Bair-Sheva and the former Russian Ambassador in Israel Alexander Bovin. One of the three books consists of 24 poems and some fragments of the poem in Yiddish, the other two are in Russian and Hebrew. The Mayor of Bair-Sheva David Bonfeld presented these books to the museum. I have to remind that the first edition of poems and rhymes by Markish, translated into Ukrainian by the Kiev poetess Valeria Boguslavskaya, was published about a year ago. The book was printed in the library series of the Institute of Jewish Studies under the symbolic name "The groom of the snow-storm".
